Waiting For Bengaluru’s Pink Line? Not Yet — 36 Safety Fixes Still Pending Before It Opens

Bengaluru’s Pink Line opening hinges on 36 fixes. The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety has flagged missing fire safety arrangements, malfunctioning lifts, damaged electrical earthing and pending train tests on the Kalena Agrahara–Tavarekere stretch. BMRCL says it will respond within a day or two, but no opening date is out.

In a letter dated October 9, the CMRS, Southern Circle, asked the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) to submit compliance reports and additional technical documents before the section can be authorised for passenger traffic.

The observations follow a statutory inspection from October 6 to 8, which, according to reports, covered the elevated tracks, stations, Kothanur depot, train trials and the Operations Control Centre. The findings are listed in a five-page report.

What Exactly Did Safety Commissioner Flag?

The 36 observations cover civil works, electrical and traction systems, signalling and telecommunications, rolling stock and operations. The commissioner noted that emergency evacuation arrangements and signage at stations were incomplete.

The report also points to defects in electrical earthing along the viaduct, damaged earth conductors, and pitting and corrosion on rail tops.

Documents establishing the rolling stock’s fitness for commercial operations were found deficient, and several train-testing issues need detailed reports prepared jointly by the original equipment manufacturers and BMRCL.

What Does BMRCL Say?

A senior BMRCL official said the corporation would respond to the queries in a day or two. BMRCL has said the CMRS inspection is a statutory requirement before passenger service can begin.

It has reportedly also asked the state government to schedule the opening for commercial operations.

Sources said the government has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the inauguration, and Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has reportedly written to him seeking a date.

What Should Bannerghatta Road Commuters Know?

The 7.5-km elevated stretch has six stations: Kalena Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIM Bangalore, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital and Tavarekere. Jayadeva Hospital connects to the Yellow Line. Once it opens, the operational network is expected to grow from 96.10 km to 103.60 km. Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has said the line will ease congestion on Bannerghatta Road. The underground section to Nagawara is expected by March 2027.
